Women’s Hoops Unable to Keep Pace With ETBU in Fourth Quarter

MARSHALL, Texas- The Belhaven University women's basketball team was unable to slow down one of the top teams from the ASC East on Thursday evening as they fell by a score of 73-59.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Belhaven found themselves down 14-5 midway through the opening period.

- The Blazers went through multiple minutes of field goal droughts throughout the quarter, and ETBU took advantage of it to extend their lead out to double digits at 23-12.

- In the second quarter, Belhaven quickly accumulated a 9-0 run to close the deficit down to 25-21 after an India Sims bucket from inside the paint.

- Moments later, Thornton scored with ease on a fast break layup, and Lauren Brooks sunk two free throws to give the Blazers a 34-32 lead.

- Belhaven continued to shoot well from the foul line, and held a 38-34 advantage at halftime. BU out-scored ETBU 26-15 in the second period.

- Early on in the third quarter, things continued to go well for the Blazers. Brittany Ford knocked down a long-range three, and then Lauren Brooks tacked on a mid-range jumper to give the Green and Gold its largest lead of the game at 45-36.

- However, ETBU would not go away, and stormed themselves right back into the contest with an 11-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead.

- Belhaven trailed just 52-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

- The Tigers dominated both ends of the floor in the final period as they swiftly pushed their lead out to double figures after scoring on three offensive trips.

- The Blazers committed four straight turnovers, which added on to ETBU's lead as they went on a 15-2 run to pull away at 67-52.

- The Tigers out-scored Belhaven 21-9 in the fourth quarter.

KEY STATISTICS

- AaLiyaha Thornton led the Blazers with a team-high 17 points on 5-6 shooting from the field. Thornton also knocked down all four free throw attempts from the line and shot 100 percent from behind the arc on 3-3 shooting.

- Brittany Ford collected nine points with three made three-pointers.

- Kayla Smothers added eight points, while India Sims, Alexis Caldwell, and Lauren Brooks chipped in with six points apiece. Caldwell led the Green and Gold with five rebounds.

- As a team, the Blazers shot 34 percent from the field.

- BU connected on 6-16 three-point attempts.

- The Blazers shot 83 percent from the free throw line on 15-18 shooting.
