Costinett Walks Off as Blazers Defeat No. 10 UT Dallas in Extras

JACKSON, Miss. - On the first pitch of his at bat in the bottom of the 10th, junior designated hitter Will Costinett sent a fly ball over the left field wall to walk-off for the Blazers as they take the opening game of the three-game series against No. 10 UT Dallas, 5-3, on Friday evening from Smith-Wills Stadium.

The home run was the ninth of the season for the St. Francisville, La. native, and it is the second walk-off homer of the season for BU, joining Tee Payne, who smashed a solo shot against Concordia Texas on March 24.

The Blazers (18-12, 8-8 ASC) were down early as the Comets (20-7, 9-4) put together a two-run first inning.

The Green and Gold responded in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Wesson led the frame off with a single. After the sophomore stole second and Julyan Urena drew a walk, the duo would move up 90 feet to second and third base, respectively. On a failed pickoff attempt, Wesson moved to third base, while Urena made it safely to second on a UTD fielding error.

After a groundout, JG Miley brought home the Blazers' first run on a sacrifice fly, while the second run was scored on an error.

Tied at two through four innings, UTD retook the lead on a triple after a leadoff walk in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hodges, who reached base on a UTD error, got all the way around to third on two stolen bases. However, the senior was stranded at third base.

In the sixth, with Kreg Garner at second and Costinett at first, BU scored the tying run on a bunt single by Wesson. The UTD first baseman was unable to field the ball from the pitcher to score Garner to tie the game up at three.

The Blazers had a runner on base from the sixth to the ninth inning, and in each of those innings, a runner was stranded 90 feet from home plate.

In the 10th, after UTD went to the bullpen, Garner led off the inning with a base knock before Costinett's walk-off on the next pitch.

Tanner Cable, who earned a no decision, tossed seven innings, allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), four walks and tied a season-best nine strikeouts in the contest.

Chase Birch pitched the eighth and struck out one batter while allowing one hit.

Austin Douglas (2-0) kept the bats quiet against the best offensive team in the ASC, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out one.

Both of Douglas' victories have come in extra innings this season for Belhaven, who improve to 2-1 in such games in 2017.

Garner and Wesson each recorded a multi-hit game for the Blazers.

As a team, the Blazers swiped seven bases, including four from Hodges, who has now stolen four bags in a game twice this season. He last stole four bases in a game on March 18 at McMurry. The senior now has 18 steals on the season and is two away from 50 in his Belhaven career.

UTD is ranked in two different polls for NCAA Division III Baseball. They are ranked 10th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and 12th in the D3Baseball.Com poll.

The two teams will be back on the diamond Saturday for a twin bill. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Smith-Wills Stadium.
