JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven University softball hosts LeTourneau University Thursday and Friday for its final home series of the season. The Blazers and the YellowJackets will play a single game Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Friday at 12 p.m. The Green and the Gold will honor its eight seniors prior to the start of Friday's doubleheader.
Belhaven's eight seniors include
Mary Austin Barber,
Megan Goss,
Hannah Holloway,
Savannah Johnston,
Crystal Kehtel,
Brooke Laigast,
Savannah Lyon and
Taylor Surrento.
Mary Austin Barber is one of two, four-year seniors for the Blazers. Over her four years, Barber has appeared in 115 games with 33 hits in 108 at-bats. The Starkville, Miss. native has recorded 37 runs scored and 21 RBI with five doubles and one triple. This season, she ranks second on the team with a .323 batting average.
Megan Goss has played two seasons as a first baseman for the Blazers. She has recorded a .280 batting average,14 RBI and one home run over 38 career games.
Hannah Holloway came to Belhaven last season from Pearl River Community College. The Petal, Miss. native has appeared in 75 games, totaling 55 hits, 35 runs scored, three home runs and 20 RBI. She went for a .330 batting average last season in helping lead Belhaven to the NCCAA World Series.
Savannah Johnston has hit well above .300 in both of her two seasons with the Blazers. recording a .377 average last season and a .333 hitting percentage this season. The McComb, Miss. native has tallied 35 career hits, 25 runs and seven doubles while appearing in 62 games.
Crystal Kehtel is the other member of the Belhaven senior class that has been with the Blazers for four years. The Madison, Miss. native has appeared in 101 games over her career, totaling six home runs, 10 doubles, two triples, 31 RBI and a .272 batting average. Last season, Kehtel hit .308 with four home runs, and was named to the NCCAA World Series All-Tournament Team.
Brooke Laigast is in her second season with Belhaven after transferring from Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Laigast has recorded a .298 batting average in 65 career games, scoring 21 runs while driving in 13. This season, she leads the Blazers with five stolen bases.
Savannah Lyon joined the Blazers last season from Jones County Junior College. The Laurel, Miss. native has a .363 average with 13 doubles, five home runs and 40 RBI in 73 career games. Lyon was named to the NCCAA Mideast All-Region team last season after hitting for a .396 average and slugging .642.
Taylor Surrento is the lone pitcher of the eight seniors, and has been with the Blazers for two seasons. Surrento has tallied 16 wins in the circle for her career, posting a 3.05 ERA in 181.1 innings pitched. The Elizabeth City, N.C. native has 155 career strikeouts, and ranks second in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) this season with 79 strikeouts.
The Blazers (13-19) are coming off of a series sweep over Howard Payne on the road, and have now won six of their past 11 games. The Green and Gold are 6-5 at home this season, and will be returning to McLeod Field for the first time since March 22.
Lyon recorded six hits in 11 at-bats in the sweep of Howard Payne. The senior drove in three runs for the series, including the game-winning RBI in the Blazers' 2-1 win in the series finale.
Junior pitcher
Valiree Blair allowed just two runs in 7.1 innings pitched versus Howard Payne. In the Blazers' 6-3 victory over the Jackets, she earned the first Belhaven save since the 2015 season, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings. Blair then picked up her second win of the season in an 8-6 win.
LeTourneau (13-21, 8-19 ASC) is coming off of a 6-5 extra-innings win over Hardin-Simmons, but have dropped seven of their past nine contests. The YellowJackets own a 5-9 road mark this season.
Courtney Matulis leads LeTourneau with a .359 batting average, 23 runs scored and 23 RBI. Whitney Judd is hitting .357 with three triples and 21 runs. As a team, the YellowJackets are batting .279 and are scoring 4.3 runs per game.
In the circle, LeTourneau has just a 6.18 team ERA, and are allowing opponents to bat .305.
Belhaven swept LeTourneau in Jackson last season, defeating the YellowJackets 5-1, 3-0 and 9-3.
