JACKSON, Miss. - In their second-to-last non-conference contest of the 2017 season, the Belhaven baseball team earned their 14th home victory of the 2017 season with a 14-4 win over Rust College Wednesday afternoon from Smith-Wills Stadium.
With two outs in the bottom of the first,
Daniel Ammirati and
Stephen Sexton had back-to-back singles. After two wild pitches, Ammirati scored the first run for BU.
After a
Will Costinett walk, Sexton scored the second run on a wild pitch.
In the third, Sexton and Costinett connected for back-to-back solo home runs to put BU ahead 4-0 through three innings.
The Green and Gold added two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. After
Tee Payne and
Ryan Wesson reached base,
Terrell Hodges brought them home on a two-run RBI single.
Rust (5-23) would get on the board in the fifth, but the Blazers (19-14) responded with six runs in the bottom half to blow the contest open.
JG Miley brought home Sexton on a fielder's choice, and after
Julyan Urena and Payne walked to load the bases, Wesson scored
Trip Benson, pinch hitting for Miley, on an infield hit.
Following a pitching change, Hodges brought his third RBI of the game home via a single, scoring Urena.
Gabe Veith, pinch hitting, drew a sacrifice fly to score Payne to make it 10-1.
While Ammirati coaxed a walk,
Reed Bolton scored from third on a wild pitch on the fourth ball out of the strike zone.
The 12th Blazer run came on another Bearcat wild pitch that scored Hodges.
Belhaven tacked on two more runs in the sixth.
Ty Dean, who started the inning with a walk, scored on a wild pitch as Benson walked.
Drew Bellipanni scored the 14th run on a Rust fielding error.
Hodges, Costinett and Wesson each recorded two hits in the contest for BU, while Sexton came around and scored in all three plate appearances.
Brick Pugh (1-0) earned the victory in his first start of the season, going five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking our four. The sophomore is now 3-0 in his career with the Blazers.
Belhaven returns to the diamond on Thursday to open a three-game, American Southwest Conference series against the University of the Ozarks. The series will open with a twin bill beginning at 4 p.m. from Smith-Wills.
