Softball Falls to Concordia Texas in Series Finale

AUSTIN, TEXAS -  Belhaven softball dropped a 9-4 decision to Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series between the Blazers and the Tornados.

Heavy rains forced the game to conclude after the end of the top of the sixth inning. The rain began to fall in the fourth inning.

Concordia totaled 11 hits in the game, including three doubles. The Tornados used a four-run fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Concordia loaded the bases twice in the inning, and got RBI singles from Kayla Patton, Haley Dennett and Katie Daniel.

The Blazers got on the scoreboard first in this one, putting one run on the board in the top of the first. Meg Garton led off the game with a single to center, and advanced to second on a Hannah Holloway sacrifce bunt. A wild pitch moved Garton to third and a throwing error by the Concordia catcher allowed Garton to come home to score.

Concordia answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Patton doubled to plate Emma Martino while Daniel singled to right to score Patton.

Belhaven would regain the lead in the top of the second, adding two runs to go up 3-2. Megan Goss and Brooke Laigast recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies for the Green and Gold.

After a scoreless bottom of the second for Concordia and a scoreless top of the third for Belhaven, Daniel collected a two-RBI double in the bottom of the third to give the Tornados a 4-3 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the Green and Gold would even the score when Savannah Johnston hit an infield single to score Goss from third.

Shelby Burris picks up the win in the circle for the Tornados, pitching four scoreless inning in relief. Burris improves to 9-0 on the season.

Johnston and Savannah Lyon tallied two hits each for the Blazers.

With the win today, Concordia sweeps the series versus Belhaven. Belhaven now sits at 4-11 on the season while Concordia improves 13-5.

The Green and Gold return home to McLeod Field next week, hosting Rust College on Tuesday, March 7 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
