Blazers' Bats Pound Out 13 Runs to Win Series over HSU

JACKSON, Miss. - The Blazers pounded out 13 runs and 14 hits to overcome a three-run Hardin-Simmons home run to defeat the Cowboys in the rubber match of the three-game series, 13-3, Saturday afternoon from Smith-Wills Stadium.

The Cowboys of HSU (4-6, 1-2) got the bats going out of the gate, picking up where they left off in game two of the series and doubleheader Friday night. Both Taylor Cooling and Zach de Luna recorded back-to-back singles to start the game off of Belhaven starter Tyler Wolfe. After a flyout, Dylan Sweeney hit a three-run homer to right field to give HSU the early 3-0 advantage.

The Green and Gold responded in the bottom half of the first inning, as Stephen Sexton brought home Terrell Hodges for an RBI double for the first run. Daniel Ammirati brought Sexton home on an RBI single.

In the bottom of the second, BU (6-3, 2-1) evened the score at three runs apiece, thanks to JG Miley scoring on a wild pitch after reaching base on a double.

It was the third inning, however, that capped the contest for the Blazers, as seven runners came across home plate and 13 batters hit in the frame to put the game out of reach, 10-3.

Sexton, Ammirati and Julyan Urena started the inning by getting on base with a single, walk and a bunt single, respectively. After a pop-up for the first out, Will Costinett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Sexton to give the Blazers their first lead of the contest.

Following a pitching change, Ryan Wesson delivered a sacrifice fly to score Ammirati to make it 5-3 in favor of the Blazers.

Miley and Dean followed with back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to four, 7-3. After Terrell Hodges was hit by the pitch, Sexton brought in the fifth run of the inning on a bases loaded walk.

Ammirati kept the line moving following a HSU pitching change with a two-run RBI single to make it a seven-run third, leading 10-3.

BU added three runs in the fifth, with two of the three off a Sexton two-run home run, his third of the season.

Ammirati next doubled to left-center field. After an Urena groundout to push the senior to third, Kreg Garner made it 13-3 with an RBI single.

Sexton and Ammirati each recorded three hits in the contest, with four and three RBIs, respectively.

Wolfe (3-0) goes the distance for BU in the contest, allowing three runs over seven innings, while fanning seven.

BU finishes 6-3 on the opening homestand, and will now travel on the road for the first time in 2017. The first game of the four-game road swing will be up Riverside Drive as BU takes on Millsaps in the second game of the Maloney Series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday night from Twenty Field.
