JACKSON, Miss. - A five-run fourth inning by the Majors doomed the Blazers baseball team on Tuesday afternoon, as the Green and Gold were defeated by Millsaps, 6-3 at Smith-Wills Stadium in the 2017 opener of the Cowboy Maloney Series.
Belhaven (4-2) was able to strike first in the bottom of the third. On the first pitch,
Julyan Urena smashed a double to center field. After moving to third on a
JG Miley bunt, the freshman was brought home by
Ty Dean on an RBI single.
In the fourth, Belhaven starter
David Hall (1-1), who found his way out of trouble in the first three innings stranding three runners on base in the first three innings, was unable to get out of the fourth inning. The Majors (4-5) batted around in the frame, scoring five times, capped off by a two-run double by Andy Page.
BU would chip at the lead in the fifth. After back-to-back free passes by
Daniel Ammirati and Urena and a strikeout to begin the inning, Dean walked to load the bases.
Terrell Hodges brought Ammirati and Urena home to make it 5-3 in favor of the Majors heading into the home stretch.
In the sixth, Millsaps would get one of the runs back on a fielding error by Belhaven to lead 6-3.
Led by Jacob Mardick (1-0), who pitched four shutout innings out of the bullpen, the Majors only allowed three hits while fanning nine in five relief innings.
Hodges finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Dean tallied two hits in three at bats and an RBI.
The Blazers return to the field this weekend to conclude their nine-game homestand to open the 2017 season. Belhaven will face Hardin-Simmons to open the conference schedule. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m. from Smith-Wills.
