JACKSON, Miss. - It took some time for
Samara Dingiswayo to get the feel of shooting from downtown with the Green and Gold. Thanks to eight 3-pointers and a game-winning floater with 2.4 seconds left in overtime, the Belhaven women's basketball team defeated the Louisiana College Wildcats, 94-92 on Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena.
The Oakland, Calif. native tied the record for shots made from downtown with seven three weeks ago against the Ozarks. Coming into the fourth period, she tied the record again. The eighth shot from beyond the arc would be beneficial late in the period for the Green and Gold. With 83-80 with 39 seconds to go, Dingiswayo grabbed the pass from
Sierra Pittman and knocked down the triple twine to tie the game at 83 with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.
Following a Louisiana College timeout, the Wildcats answered with a jump shot by Rachel Johnson with 2.7 seconds left to give LC (8-15) the two-point advantage.
Following a Blazers timeout,
Candler Gregory inbounded to Dingiswayo, who drained the left-side jumper at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, tied at 85.
In the overtime period, the Blazers' (14-11) lone field goal came at the best time. Tied at 92 with 22 seconds remaining, Pittman attempted to win it on a layup with 16 seconds remaining, but the ball went out of bounds and it remained in the Blazers possession with 12.6 left in the overtime period.
After the Blazers inbounded,
Ieshia Dixon kicked the pass to Dingiswayo to the wing, after blowing through a Wildcat defender, she had the lane open for the floater with 2.4 seconds remaining to give the Green and Gold the lead and win, 94-92.
Dingiswayo finished with a career-best 34 points, and is the first 30-point player for BU since Ariel Wilson accomplished the feat on Nov. 15, 2014 when she dropped 33 on Tougaloo in Rugg Arena. She missed a double-double by one rebound with nine in the contest.
Eight 3-pointers marks a school record for the senior, passing Sarah Carr, who drained seven in the 2011 season.
Since the turn of the calendar to 2017, Dingiswayo is shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Pittman finished with 15 points and three assists, while Gregory totaled 14 points, seven boards, three assists and two steals.
Off the bench,
Kayla Smothers racked up 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes.
The Blazers sank 35 free throws in the contest, which ties the most in school history, dating back to Nov. 18, 1986.
Kourtney McGhee finished with 17 points, while Brooke Jones totaled 16 points and 10 boards for the Wildcats.
