Blazers Shut Down LETU in Second Half, Edge YellowJackets to Spoil Senior Day

LONGVIEW, Texas - Belhaven women's basketball earned a key road victory to defeat LeTourneau, 84-78, on Saturday afternoon from Solheim Arena, thanks to two Blazers with 20-point performances.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the first 20 minutes, where no team held a lead bigger than six points, but it was LeTourneau with the lead going into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Green and Gold (12-11) went on a scoring spree, outscoring the YellowJackets, 24-9, in the frame, including a 20-4 run in the final 7:48 of the third.

LETU (12-11) pushed back in the fourth quarter. With less than six minutes remaining, Crystal Jones drained a 3-pointer to get the deficit back to two, 69-67. However, LeTourneau was able to knot the game at 72 apiece up with 4:56 left.

After an empty trip for the Blazers on their next possession, the YellowJackets regained the lead thanks to free throws by Jones and a layup by LaTanya Drakes.

Up 76-72 with 3:38 left, BU evened the score at 76 with a Maleah Isaac layup and a Ke'Asia Gray layup.

After a LETU timeout, the Yellowjackets regained the lead via a Drakes layup, putting the score to 78-76 in favor of the Yellowjackets with 1:46 remaining.

30 seconds later, after back-to-back misses, the Blazers retained possession, and Isaac was there again for the lay-in to tie the game at 78.

After a missed LETU shot, the Blazers gave the ball to Candler Gregory, who drained a clutch 3-pointer off a Sierra Pittman assist with 38 seconds remaining. The Blazers defense held off the YellowJackets to seal the win.

Gregory led the Blazers with 21 points and nine rebounds. The senior finished 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the contest.

Pittman tallied 20 points and eight boards for the Green and Gold, while Samara Dingiswayo scored 18 points, grabbed five rebounds and swatted five shots.

In the second half, Gregory and Pittman scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Vamikka Smith totaled 10 boards with six points and three assists and blocks each for the Blazers victory.

LaTanya Drakes led LETU with 25 points and 17 rebounds, while Crystal Jones posted 23 points.

The Blazers return for the final time in the regular season, as the Green and Gold host East Texas Baptist. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday from Rugg Arena.
