JACKSON, Miss. - The 2017 Belhaven baseball team started in the right direction on Friday night, as the Green and Gold defeated the Berry Vikings, 10-6, from Smith-Wills Stadium.
The Green and Gold scored the first run of the season in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by
Gabe Veith, bringing home
Kreg Garner, who led off the frame with a single.
The next half inning, Berry (0-2) tied the contest without the benefit of a hit. Austin Haight was hit by a pitch. After a stolen base and advancing to third on a groundout, he scored on a pass ball.
The lead would not last long for the Vikings.
JG Miley started the bottom of the third flying around the bases with a leadoff triple. The Tupelo, Miss. native came home on a wild pitch to give the Green and Gold a 2-1 lead.
After a
Ty Dean walk and a popout by
Terrell Hodges,
Stephen Sexton went deep for the first time with the Blazers to extend the lead to 4-1.
In the fourth, the wheels fell apart for
Tanner Cable. Granted he only allowed one run without a hit, he allowed his first base hit on the first batter, Casey Whitaker. After a single by Slade Dale, Whitaker was picked off. Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice, the eighth batter in the order, Devin Post, hit a three-run homerun to tie the contest, and that would eventually ended the night for Cable.
Now tied at four runs apiece halfway through the contest, BU untied the contest and regained the lead for good thanks to a Hodges double, scoring Miley, who led off the frame with a walk.
Once again, the bat of Sexton came alive once again. The Arkansas-Monticello transfer launched his second dinger of the game to extend the lead to 7-4 in favor of BU.
After the Vikings added a run in the top of the seventh, the Blazers added three more runs in the bottom half. BU started the frame with three straight hits by Miley, Dean and Hodges. Hodges added two RBIs to his night bringing them home.
Berry added a run in the top of the ninth, but it was BU who defeated Berry, 10-6.
Miley finished 2-for-3 with two walks and scored on three of his four times on base.
Hodges totaled two doubles and three RBIs in the win.
Sexton finished the night with two home runs and four runs batted in.
Whitaker and Dale each posted two hits for Berry.
Cable made his first start back from an injury-plagued season on Friday night. The senior went 3.2 innings, allowed four hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out five on 73 pitches.
David Hall, in his first collegiate appearance, posted his first career win relieving Cable. The Athens, Ala. native allowed three baserunners and struck out one.
For Berry, J.T. Eggert (0-1) took the loss, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings.
The weekend for the Blazers will conclude on Saturday, as they take on the defending National Champions, Trinity University of Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Smith-Wills Stadium.
