Belhaven’s Comeback Bid Falls Short to Rhodes College

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Belhaven women's basketball team second-half comeback bid falls short to Rhodes College, 71-69, in non-conference play Tuesday evening inside of Mallory Gymnasium in Memphis, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
- In the opening quarter, Lauren Brooks scored a quick jumper from inside the arc to give the Blazers a 2-0 advantage.

- Both teams traded baskets until Belhaven took the 5-4 lead over Rhodes.

- Rhodes shooting started to heat up going on a 9-4 run with 2:54 remaining in the first period.

- The Green and Gold would go on a 4-2 run to close out the first quarter to make the score 15-13 with Rhodes leading.

- In the second quarter, the Lynx's came out firing from three-point range draining two three-pointers to bring the score to 21-13.

- The Blazers and the Lynx would start exchanging baskets, going on a 4-4 run midway through the second quarter.

- After a foul by Bailey Edwards, Kelsey Brown drained two free throws making the score 29-25.

- Rhodes would then go on an 8-5 run to close the half.

- The two teams would go into the halftime break with Rhodes leading 37-30.

- The Blazers came out of halftime hot outshooting the Lynx 20-12.

- The Green and Gold gained their first lead since the first quarter to end the third quarter 50-49.

- Rhodes College would open the fourth quarter 7-3 run and have the 3 point advantage.

- With 3:03 left in the game, the Blazers tied the ballgame up 64-64 off of a free throw by India Sims.

-  The Lynx went on a 7-2 run to bring the clock down to 10 seconds.

- With only one second left in the contest Cora Cooley drained a three pointer, but it was not enough for the Blazers making the final score 71-69

KEY STATISTICS
 
- There were three Blazers that had double-digit points in the ballgame.

-  Cora Cooley led the Blazers with 16 points and 50 percent going 1-2 from 3-point range. She also added a rebound and assist in the contest.

- Lauren Brooks scored the first five points for the Green and Gold in the game. She finished the night with 11 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.

- AaLiyaha Thornton posted 10 points, four rebounds, and 2 steals.

- India Sims chipped in nine points with four rebounds and one steal.

- As a team, the Blazers shot 41.9 percent from the field and 68.2 percent from the free throw line.

- The Green and Gold also added 33 points from the bench and 14 second chance points.

UP NEXT
The Green and Gold will be off for 9 days, as their next game will be their home and conference opener on November 30 against the Hardin-Simmons University. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. at Rugg Arena.
