Men's Basketball Preview: Huntingdon, Howard Payne & Sul Ross

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's basketball team will play three games this week, traveling to Montgomery, Ala. on Tuesday to face Huntingdon College at 6 p.m. before returning home to host conference foes Howard Payne University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Sul Ross State University on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

Belhaven (2-7, 0-4 ASC) will be looking to break a four-game losing streak when they head to Montgomery on Tuesday. The Blazers' last win came on Dec. 13 when they defeated Huntingdon 65-62 at home. Belhaven forced the Hawks into 21 turnovers and scored 25 points off those turnovers. 

After the victory over Huntingdon, the Blazers dropped conference games to McMurry and Hardin-Simmons, and non-conference contests to Millsaps College and Covenant College. Despite jumping out to a 15-2 start versus Millsaps, the Blazers dropped a 63-56 decision to their local rival. While on New Years Eve, the Blazers went on a 17-4 run late in the second half to trim a 17-point Covenant lead to just four points, but the Green and Gold would ultimately fall to the Scots 78-70.

The Blazers continue to be one of the top offensive teams in the American Southwest Conference, ranking in the top half of the conference in scoring (80.1), assists (17.9), field goal percentage (.462), three-point percentage (.367) and three-point field goals made (9.3). 

Huntingdon College Hawks
Huntingdon (0-10, 0-1 USA South) is still searching for its first win of the 2016-17 season. Head coach Mike Pugh announced his retirement from the coaching profession last Friday after 10 seasons with Huntingdon and 41 seasons as a coach in the state of Alabama. Associate head coach Caleb Kimbrough took over as head coach immediately.

After falling to Belhaven in Jackson on Dec. 13, the Hawks fell to Methodist, Transylvania and Lynchburg. Huntingdon is scoring 65 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting while allowing opponents to score 85 points per game on 46 percent shooting. The Hawks are out-rebounding opponents 39.1 to 37.6.

Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets
Howard Payne (6-5, 4-1 ASC) has won five of its past seven games after starting the season at 1-4. The Yellow Jackets are coming off of a 67-58 victory over Trinity University on Saturday. The ASC West Division leader owns just a 1-4 record on the road. 

Howard Payne has been one of the best defensive teams in the conference this season, ranking third in the ASC in opponents points per game (74.6), second in three-point field goal defense (.309) and second in blocked shots (4.3). The Yellow Jackets also lead the confernce in offensive rebounds per game (13.5). 

The Yellow Jackets will play Louisiana College on Tuesday before Thursday's matchup with the Blazers. Last season, Howard Payne defeated Belhaven 72-64 on Jan. 9 in Brownwood, Texas.

Sul Ross State University Lobos
Sul Ross State (7-6, 4-1 ASC) has won three of its past four contests. The Lobos are coming off of a 71-64 loss at Elmhurst College on Friday, snapping a three-game winning streak. Sul Ross has a 2-3 away record this season. 

Sul Ross also boasts one of the stingiest defenses in the conference, ranking second in the ASC in scoring defense (73.8) and defensive rebounding (30.9) while leading the conference in field goal percentage defense (.397). The Lobos do rank second-to-last in both scoring (75.2) and field goal percentage (.419), but are second in the ASC in assists per game (17.3), assisting on 63 percent of their made field goals. 

The Lobos will also play Louisiana College before facing Belhaven, taking on the Wildcats on Thursday. Sul Ross defeated Belhaven 82-75 last season in on Jan. 7 in Alpine, Texas.
