Women's Basketball Layton Jackson

Women's Basketball Preview: LeTourneau and Texas Tyler

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's basketball team returns to Rugg Arena this weekend as they host American Southwest Conference (ASC) opponents LeTourneau and Texas Tyler.

Thursday's contest with the Yellowjackets is slated for 5:30 p.m., while the matchup with the Patriots is tabbed for a 1 p.m. tip Saturday afternoon.

The Blazers return to Jackson with a five-game winning streak, and the Green and Gold are 6-1 inside Rugg Arena.

In the last five games, the Blazers are shooting 35.6 percent, while allowing opponents to a 33 percent mark from the field. From beyond the arc, the Blazers have limited their opponents to 16 percent. The Blazers have averaged outscoreing their opponents, 72-58, in the last five games.

Three Blazers, Sierra Pittman, Candler Gregory and Samara Dingiswayo have averaged double digit figures.

Pittman leads the charge with 15.2 points per game during the winning streak, while shooting 47 percent from the field. From the charity stripe, the senior is 84 percent during the streak. However, the Mobile, Ala. native has been clutch at the free-throw line in the final five minutes of game during the winning streak, going 91 percent (20-for-22).

Gregory ranks second on the team with 12.8 points per game, while shooting 37 percent (11-for-29)  from downtown.

Dingiswayo may be averaging 10 points per contest, but the senior's presence on defense has been superb in the last five games. She has totaled 34 rebounds (6.8 per game), while blocking a team-high 12 shots during the streak.

Vamikka Smith has corralled a team best 11.8 rebounds per game in the last five games to go with 5.4 points per game.

Preview: LeTourneau University
LeTourneau will come to Jackson with an 8-9 record but are 6-3 in ASC play. However, LETU has a 1-5 record away from Solheim Arena.

The Yellowjackets have the fourth-best scoring offensive team in the ASC (69.2), and when the points are on the board, they share the ball well. Averaging 15.5 dimes per game, this is tops in the ASC with Howard Payne.

The Blazers will look to try to stop the two best scorers in the ASC, Crystal Jones and LaTanya Drakes. In 17 games, Jones has scored double figures in 16 games. Leading the league with 20.1 points per contest, she has dropped more than 20 points in a game nine times, capped off by a 35-point performance against Sul Ross State on Dec. 3.

While Jones leads the conference in scoring, Drakes leads the ASC on the glass. Averaging 12.9 boards per game, she has recorded double digits in 12 of her 16 games played, as well as 11 double-doubles. Averaging 18.1 points per contest, the senior has totaled five 20-point games.

In last season's matchups, BU fell to LETU in Longview, 70-56, but the Blazers took down the Yellowjackets, 63-59, in Rugg Arena.

Preview: University of Texas at Tyler
The Patriots were picked as the preseason favorites after a 30-2 record, an ASC Basketball Conference Tournament Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Elite 8 in 2015-16. After a 5-0 start, the Patriots have won seven of their last 12 games.

Michelle Obach leads the Patriots in minutes played (33.4) and in scoring (13.7). Ranked 11th in the ASC, the senior also dishes out 3.3 assists per game, good for sixth in the league.

D'Onna Matthews also scores in double figures for UTT at 10.2 per game, but she leads the team in rebounding at 6.1.

The Blazers will look to snap a two-game losing streak to the Patriots, falling in both contests a year ago.
