JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven football team is preparing for its battle with second-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater, Wis. at 1 p.m.
The Blazers (1-0) will look to extend their winning ways to Whitewater after a 28-25 season-opening victory against Riverside rival Millsaps in the seventh edition of the Riverside Rumble.Â
Leading the offensive charge in the Rumble was the duo of
Hunter McEachern and
LaMiquell Roberts. McEachern completed 30 passes on 55 attempts for 334 yards and three touchdowns.Â
Roberts, who is the reigning National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week, caught 14 passes for 220 yards with one touchdown.Â
The Mobile, Ala. native tied the single-game record with receptions and broke the yardage record of 208 set by Justin Kenyon in 2013.Â
This will be the second meeting all-time between Belhaven and Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Blazers dropped the lone matchup to the Warhawks, 62-6, last season in Jackson at H.T. Newell Field.Â
Coming off a 51-3 victory against The College of New Jersey, Wisconsin-Whitewater (1-0) enters the second week of play No. 2 in the D3Football.com National Poll, up one spot from the preseason poll. The Warhawks earned four first place votes of the 25 available. This is the 41st consecutive week that the Warhawks have been ranked in the D3Football.com poll, with 20 weeks ranked No. 1. The last time UWW was unranked dates back to the final poll of the 2012 season.Â
The Warhawks finished the 2015 campaign 12-2 and missed the NCAA Division III Championship game for just the second time in the last 11 years with a 36-6 loss to Mount Union in the semifinals. UWW has won six National Championships in that 11-year span, including three straight from 2009 to 2011.Â
This will be the start of three consecutive games for the Green and Gold against Top 25 ranked opponents: Huntingdon (No. 21) and East Texas Baptist (No. 20) will follow the matchup versus Wisconsin-Whitewater. In total, the Blazers will play five teams this season ranked in the Top 25.Â
