Men's Soccer Fall in Opener vs. Centenary

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers dropped its season opener to Centenary, 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field.

The Gents got the scoring started early with a third minute goal by Nick Hammond off an assist by Scott Halper inside the box.

Belhaven would respond in the 30th minute with a goal by Nicolas Cornejo off a pass from Johnathan Goliday

The lead would not last long for the Green and Gold, as Bailey DeRoussel found Seth Fountain's pass in the 38th minute to unbreak the tie.

The Gents held the Blazers offense in check in the second half. Belhaven took five shots in the half but were unable to clear the net in the final 45 minutes.

Josh Gates started the match in goal for the Green and Gold and saved one of Centenary's four shots on goal.

With the loss, Belhaven snapped an eight-match winning streak in the regular season.

The Blazers will next gear up for the David Taaffe Invitational in Lookout Mountain, Ga. The Blazers will begin the two-day tournament with a matchup against host Covenant College on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. (ET).
