Softball Drops Two to Mississippi College in Mideast Region Final

CLINTON, Miss. - The Belhaven Softball team was unable to cool Mississippi College's bats in the final day of the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament, as the Choctaws claim the automatic bid to the NCCAA World Series with 4-1 and 8-0 victories against the Blazers on Wednesday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.

Mississippi College, after scoring 22 runs against Alice Lloyd in the elimination game on Tuesday, struck first in the first game with a solo home run in the second inning. That would be the only hit allowed by starter Julienne Broussard through six innings.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Blazers were able to muster across the tying run. After Savannah Lyon reached on an error and a sacrifice bunt by Haley Yasses, Taylor O'Dell delivered an RBI single up the middle to bring home Savannah Johnston, who pitch ran for Lyon.

However, the tie would be short-lived, as the Choctaws scored three times in the seventh with a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-1. With both teams at 1-1 in the tournament, the double-elimination format forced a deciding third game.

Broussard (14-3) went the distance and allowed four runs on four hits with one strikeout. She went 57 innings in between home runs, with the last one coming on February 27 against Texas Dallas.

In game two, Mississippi College (34-19) used six hits and five walks to their advantage, striking first in the second before putting a six spot in the bottom of the fourth. The Choctaws added a run in the fifth to secure the run rule, shutout victory.

Taylor Surrento (9-4) allowed seven runs (one earned) in three and two-third innings pitched.

Dani Craft and O'Dell finished with three hits each on the day for the Blazers (33-8), who lose in consecutive games for the second time this season.

Belhaven will now wait to see if they will earn an at-large bid to the NCCAA World series, scheduled for next Wednesday, May 18 through Friday, May 20 in Roanoke, Virginia. The Blazers are ranked second in the final regular season NCCAA National Top 10 rankings.
