Belhaven Sweeps Doubleheader to Take Series from UT-Tyler

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers picked up a doubleheader sweep to take the series from 12th-ranked Texas-Tyler from Smith-Wills Stadium on Saturday, winning game one 5-2 and 19-6 in game two.

In game one, both teams were unable to scratch across any runs on the scoreboard through the first five and a half innings. Through five innings, the Blazers were only able to muster four hits.

The Blazers, however, broke through in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Dane Gecina doubled to left center. After a single and stolen base by Jacob Byrd, Terrell Hodges brought both runners home with a two-run single to break the scoreless tie.

Belhaven added three more insurance runs in the frame, Trey Eschberger singled to bring home Hodges. After a pitching change and stolen bases by Adam Kowalczyk and Eschberger, Will Mullen brought the runners home with a two-run single to put the Green and Gold ahead 5-0.

UT-Tyler added two runs in the seventh, but Tanner Moulder (5-2) went the distance for the Blazers, allowing two runs on three hits with one walk while striking out five.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Belhaven started the game with three runs across in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff single by Byrd, Hodges sent a fly ball to right center field and was able to go all the way around for an inside-the-park home run, his fifth of the year. After a Kowalczyk walk and stolen base, Eschberger scored the Blazers' third run of the inning with an RBI single.

UT-Tyler (19-10, 9-6) broke the shutout in the second inning before tying the contest at three in the fourth inning, but in the bottom half of the frame, the Green and Gold responded in a big way, scoring 16 unanswered runs to secure the lead and the series victory.

The Blazers (18-11, 8-7) sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and scored six times in the frame. All of the runs were scored with two outs. After Gabe Veith reached on a fielding error, Gecina drew a four-pitch walk. With two on, Byrd broke the tie with a two-run double into the gap. Hodges followed with an RBI single to bring Byrd home. After a Hodges steal, Kowalczyk drove in the fourth run of the frame with a double down the left field line. After a UT-Tyler pitching change, Eschberger would add a double of his own to bring home Kowalczyk. Belhaven led 9-3 after four.

After the Patriots cut the Blazers lead to three at 9-6, Belhaven, once again, responded in a big way with eight runs in the frame to push the game out of reach for the Patriots. In the inning, the Blazers sent 12 batters to the plate, with the first seven reaching base. After three straight infield singles by JG Miley, Veith and Gecina to load the bases, Byrd brought Miley home on an RBI single. Hodges scored the 11th run of the game by coaxing a five-pitch walk, bringing home Veith.

After a pitching change by the Patriots, Kowalczyk brought two more runners home on a two-run single to make the score 13-6. Eschberger reloaded the bases with a hit by pitch, and Daniel Ammirati brought Hodges in on a sacrifice fly. Mullen brought Kowalczyk home on another sacrifice fly for the Blazers' 15th run.

Miley's second at bat of the inning helped scored the eighth run for the Green and Gold in the fifth and the 16th run for the Blazers with a two-run double to bring home Eschberger, while Veith's second at bat of the frame brought home Miley for the 17th run. The Green and Gold led 17-6 through five.

Belhaven added two more runs in the sixth, Byrd started the inning with a leadoff single. Hodges would reach on a hit by pitch. After Kowalczyk moved the runners along to second and third base, Eschberger brought the 18th and 19th runs with a two-run single.

Shane Brown started for Belhaven, but was unable to complete five innings to factor into the decision. Brown went four and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits. Brick Pugh (2-0) finished the fifth inning for the Green and Gold, allowing a fly ball to Gecina to end the frame.

Belhaven's 19 runs are the most scored in a game this season, surpassing a 15-run performance against Eureka College on March 12, where the Blazers won 15-1.

Eschberger went 6-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs scored in both games of the doubleheader, and extended his on-base streak to 19 games.

Byrd also extended his on-base streak to 14 straight games with a 6-for-8 day at the plate, with three RBIs and five runs scored.

Belhaven's four-game homestand will wrap up on Tuesday, as the Green and Gold will host sixth-ranked Birmingham-Southern in non-conference play. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium.
