Softball drops doubleheader on the road to No. 4 ETBU

Marshall, Texas – The Belhaven Softball team fell to No. 4 East Texas Baptist University Saturday in a doubleheader, 11-1 and 7-6.

The Blazers started off the day with a run in the top of the first off of the bat of Carly Yasses. The senior catcher singled through the left side to score Brooke Laigast.

However, that was the only run the Blazers would get in game one, as the Tigers would go on to use a five-run inning to give the Blazers their first loss of the season.

In game two, the Blazers found themselves behind early, but tied things up in the third inning. It was Yasses driving in the run again, this time with Dani Craft scoring to tie things up at 1.

Belhaven took the lead in the top of the fourth when Hannah Holloway had an RBI single to score Meg Garton.

East Texas Baptist answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Yasses picked up her eighth RBI of the weekend in the top half of the fifth. Yasses doubled to right center, scoring Mary Austin Barber.

Once again ETBU tied it up in the bottom of the inning and Belhaven responded with two runs in the sixth. Holloway had another RBI single to score Taylor O'Dell. Laigast then had an RBI groundout to score Crystal Kehtel.

However, ETBU would hit a grand slam to go up 7-5.

The Blazers attempted to rally back in the seventh, as O'Dell had an RBI single to score Savannah Lyon. But, the Blazers were unable to tie things up, falling to the top-5 ranked opposition.

The Blazers will remain on the road and head to northeast Mississippi for a double header against Rust College on Tuesday. The games are scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch in Holly Springs.
