JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball team were unable to stop a powerful shooting Millsaps team in the second game of the Riverside Rumble series, falling to the Majors, 70-59, Thursday night in the Hangar Dome.
The Blazers, after shooting 49 percent from the field in the win against Birmingham-Southern, were unable to continue their successful shooting ways at the Hangar Dome. BU only connected on seven shots in the first 20 minutes, and were 2-for-15 from downtown.
Trailing by four at the end of the first quarter, the Majors (6-4) outscored the Green and Gold 22-8, while shooting 9-for-12 from the field.
The Blazers (5-5) found their stroke in the third quarter, shooting 6-for-16 from the field, and were able to outscore the Majors, 38-31 in the final two quarters,
Sierra Pittman, who scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the third quarter, shot 6-for-10 in the period. The senior also had vive steals.
Vamikka Smith earned her first double-double of the season, scoring 12 points while grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds, while blocking three shots.
Kala-Jewel Freeman led the Majors with 20 points and grabbed 17 boards. Braxton Thomas scored 16 points for the winners.
With the loss, the teams split their season series in the women's basketball edition of the Riverside Rumble. The Blazers defeated the Majors to open the 2016-17 season, 72-68.
The Green and Gold return to the familiar hardwood of Rugg Arena on Saturday to take on Covenant. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
