Belhaven Snaps Losing Skid with Victory over Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Belhaven women's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a road win against Centenary, 77-68, Saturday night in the Gold Dome.

The two teams played a see-saw battle for the first 20 minutes. No team had more than a five-point lead in the first half.

After trailing by three after the end of the first period, 20-17, the Blazers (3-3) used a 12-5 run in the second quarter to get the Green and Gold the advantage, 29-25. Centenary used a late first half run to get the score squared away at 36 at recess.

However, in the third quarter, the Green and Gold took off midway through the period. With the Ladies down two, 46-44 with 4:59 remaining, the Blazers went on an 8-0 run to get the lead to 10, the biggest of the game. Centenary would get back into the contest with two free throws, and after a Blazer turnover, drained a 3-pointer to get the contest to 54-49 score in favor of the Blazers heading into the final 10 minutes.

With the Blazers having the five-point advantage heading into the final 10 minutes, the Green and Gold held off a late fourth quarter rally by the Ladies (2-6). Centenary, with 6:06 remaining in regulation, cut the Blazers lead to one, 60-59. However, that would be as close as Centenary would come to regaining the lead as Candler Gregory drained a 3-pointer to keep the momentum in favor of the Green and Gold for the rest of the contest.

In the fourth quarter, the Green and Gold had a 53 percent field goal percentage (8-for-15) to help seal the deal.

Leading the Blazers charge was Ke'Asia Gray, who scored 15 of her season-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. The Magee, Miss. native also collected two offensive rebounds and assists each, while going 5-for-7 from the charity stripe in 22 minutes played off the bench.

Sierra Pittman finished with 14 points with two assists, while Vamikka Smith earned a season-best 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Samara Dingiswayo grabbed a season-best 11 rebounds in the win, while Gregory finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

Jasmine Morris led Centenary with a game-high 21 points, and Savanah Doty earned a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blazers will return to action on Thursday in Abilene, Texas to resume American Southwest Conference play with McMurry. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. from the Kimbrell Arena.
