JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's soccer team finished the 2016 season on an excellent note, earning a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Howard Payne University Saturday evening inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
With just under a minute remaining in the first overtime period, junior forward
Jessica Mahoney sprinted with the ball past the Yellow Jackets last defender inside the 18-yard box, and sent a striking shot into the top right corner of the yet, giving the Blazers the win.
Despite outshooting Howard Payne 23 to six, Belhaven twice had to come back from a goal deficit.
Howard Payne's Taylor Bicknell put the Yellow Jackets up by a goal in the 12th minute, registering the first goal of the match.
Erica Rempel knotted the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute as Mahoney sent a long pass over the Yellow Jacket defense to Rempel, who took two dribbles before calmly sliding a shot past the charging Howard Payne goalkeeper.
Sixteen minutes into the second half, Rachel Crane would once again give Howard Payne a one-goal advantage. But the Blazers had a quick response, as Rempel netted her second goal of the game just over a minute later, scoring on a penalty kick.
Rempel and Mahoney finish the season with a team-high nine goals apiece. Mahoney fired six shots versus the Yellow Jackets while Rempel recorded five shots.
Dominique Farias added four shots.
Belhaven finishes the 2016 season with six wins, the highest win total since the 2013 season. The Blazers closed the season out by winning five of its final 11 games, and went 3-3 in games at the new Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
