Football Preview: Game 6 vs. McMurry

JACKSON, Miss. - Week seven of Belhaven Football will kickoff Saturday, October 15 as the Blazers host ASC opponent McMurry University inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.

Saturday's game is the second game ever inside the brand-new Behaven Bowl Stadium. The game is also the featured event for Belhaven Homecoming 2016.

The Blazers (1-4) are coming off of a 52-36 loss to Sul Ross State last week in Alpine, Texas. Belhaven held a 12-7 lead over the Lobos at the end of the first quarter, but were undone by a 28-point Sul Ross second quarter. The Blazers went on to outscore Sul Ross 18-17 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit.

Belhaven's Air Raid offense sits atop all of NCAA Division III in passing yards, totaling 448.6 per contest. LaGrange College, coached by Hal Mumme's son Matt, ranks third in the country at 410.4 yards per game.

The Blazers also lead the American Southwest Conference in completions (174) and attempts (324), and ranks second in the conference in passing touchdowns (17).

Quarterback Hunter McEachern also ranks first in Division III in passing yards (2,096). The freshman has 17 passing touchdowns on the season, the fourth-highsest season total in program history. McEachern needs just eight more touchdowns to set a new school record.

McMurry enters Saturday's matchup with a 1-3 season mark. The War Hawks' lone win of the season came in week two versus Texas College. McMurry soundly defeated Texas College 63-6. The War Hawks have losses to Southwestern University, Mary Hardin-Baylor and East Texas Baptist.

McMurry finished the 2015 season with a 4-6 overall record. The War Hawks compiled a 2-3 mark in contests away from home.

Saturday's game will mark the second all-time meeting between Belhaven and McMurry. The Blazers and the War Hawks played a tightly contested game last season in the lone previous matchup between the two schools. The Blazers held a 10-6 advantage midway through the second quarter but the War Hawks found the end zone just before the halftime whistle to take a 14-10 lead. Neither team would score in the second half.
