Blazers Snap Skid, Shut Out McMurry

ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team shut out the War Hawks of McMurry 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium.

With the win, Belhaven (1-4-1) defeats McMurry (1-4-1) for the first time in program history.

The Blazers got the scoring started early, using a corner kick in the ninth minute to grab the lead. Senior midfielder Laura Quintero sent the ball into the box and fellow senior Ashley Harber was able to connect with it and put the ball into the net to give the Blazers the lead. It was Harber's first goal of the season and also the 15th of her career at Belhaven.

Four minutes into the second half, Belhaven used another set piece corner kick to double the lead. Quintero's ball came through Harber and then on to senior midfielder Dani Craft, who also scored her first of 2015 campaign, giving the Blazers a 2-0 advantage.

Belhaven took 18 shots on the day, while allowing a season-low six shots on defense.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Molero earned her second-consecutive clean sheet of the season, being called on to make two saves.

"It was a great road win as a team," said head coach Josue Sabillon. "Our captains, Harber, Craft and Quintero, stepped up and were the key to success today. Other players were able to step up as well when our starters were battered and bruised."

Belhaven also snapped an eight-match losing streak on the road, with its last win coming on September 19, 2014 against East Texas Baptist.

Belhaven improves to 15-1-1 against current ASC opponents, while improving to 20-12-2 against institutions from the Lone Star State.

The Blazers will finish up their road trip to Abilene on Saturday, as they face Hardin-Simmons at 2:00 p.m.
