JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Men's Soccer team was unable to complete the comeback against Concordia Texas, falling 3-2 in overtime.
The Blazers (3-1-1) were down early in the match as the Tornados (6-0) scored in the sixth minute.
Down 1-0 at halftime, the Blazers gave up a second goal two minutes into the second half to fall into a 2-0 hole.
"The players heard a lot about that early goal at halftime," said head coach
Carl Griffiths. "The second goal dug a deeper hole for us, but we were able to come back. We were able to show good character."
The Blazers were able to come back with two goals. The first goal came in the 65th minute by junior forward
Logan Tassin, his first goal of the season, off an assist by
Oliver Jones.
After a foul in the 87th minute by Concordia, the Blazers were given an opportunity for a penalty kick. Senior midfielder
Cillian Thompson was able to capitalize and scored the equalizing goal, his second of the season.
The match would head into overtime, where the Blazers would see the Tornados win the match in the 95th minute, 3-2.
"Going into overtime for the second match in three days was more than we can handle on the mental side. Our composure was not where it needed to be," Griffiths added.
The Blazers will end their three-match homestand on Wednesday night against rival William Carey. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Belhaven Bowl.
