JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers travel just east of Jackson over to Clinton, Mississippi to take on cross-town rival Mississippi College Saturday night at Robinson-Hale Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Blazers stand at 0-2 on the season after falling to No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 6-62, last Saturday at H.T. Newell Field. Mississippi College will be playing in its third game of the season as well, coming off of a loss against North Alabama last week. The Choctaws started the 2015 season with a win over Texas College.
Saturday's meeting will mark the sixth game between Belhaven and Mississippi College in football. The game is also the final set between the programs for the schedule future, with Belhaven transitioning to NCAA Division III and the Choctaws moving to NCAA Division II.
Mississippi College is under the direction of second-year head coach John Bland, the 15th coach of the Choctaws in program history. Belhaven is very familiar with Bland, having played the coach several times when he was with the University of the Cumberlands from 2006-13. However, the Blazers are just 2-4 against Bland all time, with last year's win snapping a three-game skid against the coach.
The Blazers enter Saturday's contest looking to snap an 11-game losing streak dating back to week three in 2014 when the Blazers lost at then No. 4 University of the Cumberlands 27-31. The losing streak is Belhaven's longest in school history, currently four more than the previous streak from 10/18/08 to 9/12/09. Belhaven's last win came against Mississippi College, a 32-14 win at H.T. Newell Field on Sept. 6, 2014.
Belhaven is 48-52 all-time in games in the state of Mississippi. However, the Blazers are 0-3 all time at Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton. The series between Belhaven and Mississippi College has been one by the home team in each of the first five meetings.
