HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team dropped their regular season finale on Friday, falling 3-0 against William Carey University. The Blazers will enter next week's SSAC Tournament with a record of 33-22, including an 11-18 mark in league play.
Tanner Moulder received the starting nod in Friday's rubber match, delivering one of Belhaven's strongest pitching performances of the year. The Hendersonville, Tennessee junior pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just one earned run and recording three strikeouts along the way.
A bad hop that turned into a base hit was the end for Moulder, spoiling an otherwise exceptional outing. The Blazers offense never got going and was blanked for the second time in as many days, handing Moulder the hard-luck loss.
Michael Wells was credited with that base hit that changed the game, a 2-RBI single in the seventh inning. Nick Lowe added a sac fly a batter later, giving a comfortable Crusader pitching staff more than enough run support.
Chase Birch tossed the final 1.2 frames, striking out two without allowing a base hit.
Reagan Rutledge,
Hunter Sutton, and
Joey Harris provided the Blazers with their three hits, with the latter contributing the only one that went for extra bases.
Brandt Bourgeois picked up the win for the home nine, going the distance for the fourth time this season en route to his fifth victory. The right hander fanned ten and walked three while tossing 124 pitches and lifting William Carey to the series victory.
Belhaven will return to action on Wednesday in the SSAC Tournament opener from Patterson Field in Montgomery. The official bracket is set to be released on Saturday evening, with the Blazers projected to take on Auburn-Montgomery or Faulkner University.
