JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team picked up a victory in their final home game of the season, defeating the Tougaloo Bulldogs 14-4 at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers have outscored the Bulldogs 73-10 and won each of the six meetings between the two teams this year.
Belhaven scored in all but the fourth inning in the mercy-ruled victory, providing plenty of support for the seven arms that toed the rubber.
Chase Birch picked up the win as the man who pitched the fifth inning, improving to 3-0 on his freshman campaign. The only Belhaven pitcher who failed to record a strikeout was
Will Cockrell, though he retired the side in order on just 13 pitches in the fourth inning.
The Tougaloo pitching staff walked 13 batters, the most the Blazers have seen in a single game this spring. When coupled with seven base hits, Belhaven was able to cruise to an easy win and improve to 32-20 on the year.
Leadoff man
Reagan Rutledge gave the Blazers two base hits to spark the offense, including his fourth home run of the season in the third inning.
Joey Harris contributed a multi-hit performance of his own, teaming up with Rutledge and
Devin McCann to total seven RBI. Belhaven also managed to swipe nine bases in as many attempts against Tougaloo catcher Darrell Bowie.
For the Bulldogs, starter Christopher Robinson took the loss, allowing six runs over just 1.2 innings. Jamari Johnson provided little relief, surrendering eight more over the final 4.1 frames. Offensively, third baseman Joshua Thomas and designated hitter Lige Mims combined for six of the team's ten hits and three RBI.
Belhaven is set to return to action on Thursday, when they will travel to Hattiesburg to take on SSAC Western Division rival William Carey. First pitch of the three-game series is slated for 6:00 pm.
