JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team was swept in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, falling 7-2 and 7-2 at the hands of the Faulkner Eagles. Belhaven now stands at 28-20 for the year, including a 10-15 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
Saturday's opener saw Belhaven tally seven hits by seven different Blazers, with
Paul Pickerrell and
Will Mullen picking up the game's only RBI. Those two, along with centerfielder
Reagan Rutledge, each gave the Blazers a double, the only three extra base-hits from the home team.
Starter
Chase Davidson was roughed up for his second consecutive outing, while
Tanner Moulder shouldered the load and delivered 4.2 innings of solid relief work. The Belhaven offense never clicked, saddling Davidson with his third loss of the season.
Just as he did in Friday night's series opener, Randy Joung paced the top-ranked Eagle offense with three hits and two RBI. Chris Madera and Robert Llera each gave Faulkner a pair of base hits, with the latter driving in two more runs along the way.
Victor Arche went all seven innings on the mound, surrendering two earned runs and striking out three Belhaven hitters. With Faulkner's potent offense behind him, Arche never trailed and cruised to a 9-1 season record.
The nightcap featured the Blazers' biggest inning of the series, a three-run second that held up for most of the game. Faulkner scratched across a run in the fourth before tying it at 3-3 in the seventh and plating four in the top of the ninth.
Junior
Stephen Solomon gave the Blazers his second quality start in as many outings, scattering six hits and two runs over six innings. The bullpen provided little relief, allowing six hits and five earned runs over the final three frames, forcing
Zach Osha to take the loss.
Dane Gecina entered the ballgame with a batting average of just .188, but the leftfielder singled four times to pace the Belhaven offense in the series finale. Pickerrell was the only other Blazers with a multi-hit game, while Rutledge and
Emilio DeSilva picked up the only runs batted in.
Third baseman Dennis Morton turned in a 3-for-5 effort for the Eagles, with Edgar Figueroa and Nick Cain combining for four hits behind him in the batting order. Seven Faulkner hitters helped the team outhit their hosts 12-10 en route to their third victory of the weekend.
Eagle starter Phillip Anderson allowed three runs over the first 1.1 innings before leaving with an apparent injury, but Brian Bass and Alejandro Castro held Belhaven in check for the rest of the game. No Blazer scored over the final 7.2 innings, lifting Castro to his third win.
Belhaven returns to action on Wednesday, when they are set to host LSU-Shreveport at Smith-Wills Stadium. First pitch between the Blazers and Pilots is slated for 4:00 pm.
