MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven Women's Basketball team's season came to an end Thursday afternoon as the Blazers fell to top seeded Bethel University 62-47 in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
Belhaven fell behind the No. 5 Wildcats early on as Bethel started off an 8-0 run.
Ariel Wilson got things going for the Blazers, scoring the first eight points for the Green and Gold as Belhaven was able to cut the deficit back to as little as three in the first half.
However, Belhaven was able to keep the deficit down, going into the halftime break trailing 25-18.
The Blazers came out in the second half on a 5-0 run against a team that entered the day on a 22-game win streak. The run cut the deficit to 25-23, the closest Belhaven got back to the Wildcats.
Bethel answered back and quickly erased the run by Belhaven with a 7-0 run of its own.
Wilson hit one of her three shots from behind the arc to cut the deficit back to three points midway through the second. However, Wilson's 28 points was unable to keep Bethel close late, as the Wildcats pulled away by as much as 20.
Wilson also finished the game tied with a team-high eight rebounds.
TaShayla Steede also had eight rebounds in her final game as a Blazer. Steede also had six points, four assists and three blocks.
Fellow senior
Kenya Wright and
Kayla Campora also wrapped up their careers. Wright finished with three rebounds and three assists. Campora hit a pair of three pointers to finish with six points.
The Blazers wrap their first season under
Steve Calder with a 16-15 mark and an 8-10 mark in SSAC play.
