JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team dropped both games of a conference doubleheader on Saturday, falling to 16th-ranked Auburn-Montgomery by finals of 6-3 and 8-5. The Blazers now stand at 24-15 on the season, including a 9-10 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
"They're a good team that deserves a lot of credit for sweeping us this weekend," Head Coach
Hill Denson. "We were hoping to see our guys make some adjustments from yesterday, but now we have to put this behind us and try to win the next one."
Hunter Sutton gave the Blazers two hits in Saturday's opener, driving in all three of Belhaven's runs. The only other hitter with a multi-hit game was leadoff man
Reagan Rutledge, who contributed a single and his team-best sixth triple of the year.
Auburn-Montgomery shortstop Tremayne Hardin led the way with four hits, while he and Connor Smith drove in two runs apiece. Matt Miller and Blake Barrow each added two base hits, helping the Warhawks (26-10, 17-1 SSAC) outhit the Blazers 9-5.
Clark Gray (2-1) picked up his second win of the year in relief, overcoming a hit in the bottom of the fourth to record a shutout inning. Starter Raymond Moody was chased in just the third after surrendering three runs and five walks, the only walks issued by AUM in the first 16 innings of the series.
For Belhaven,
Chase Davidson allowed two earned runs over four innings, walking three and fanning three in the process.
Tanner Moulder took the loss as the first man out of the Blazer bullpen, but
Jim Tom Copeland and
Chris Good each allowed an unearned run in their respective innings.
The Warhawk offense wasn't slowed a bit in the series finale, tallying a dozen hits and scoring another eight runs to finish the sweep. Smith and centerfielder Josh Thompson combined to go 7-for-10 at the plate and bring in four runs in the process.
Paul Pickerrell highlight the effort for Belhaven with three hits, while
Hunter Sutton and
Gabe Wilson each added a pair of singles. Designated hitter
Hamilton Harper doubled in the second inning, the only extra base hit of the 25 between the two teams.
Moulder took his second loss of the day after
Will Cockrell failed to pitch into the third inning. The Blazers sent five arms to the rubber in the nightcap, with all but
Zach Osha surrendering at least a single run.
Cole Goodwin (7-1) gave the Warhawks a strong performance on the mound, scattering three earned runs, five strikeouts, and 120 pitches over 7.2 innings. Seth Arroyo tossed the final 1.1 innings to lift AUM to their third victory of the weekend and a league-leading 17-1 conference record.
Belhaven returns to action on Tuesday, when they host Talladega College in non-conference action. First pitch from Smith-Wills Stadium is set for 4:00 pm.
