JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team picked up their fourth straight win on Tuesday, outdueling LSU-Alexandria by a final of 12-11. The streak marks the third time this season that the Blazers have won at least four in a row, with their longest coming in the first five games of the year.
"It's always nice to hang in on the close ones, but these guys gave us all we could handle tonight," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "We are hoping this is the beginning of us becoming a new ball club."
LSUA got on the scoreboard in the first inning before the Blazers tied the game an inning later. The third frame saw the Generals plate another run, but Belhaven stormed back a three-run bottom half to regain a 4-2 lead.
The two teams alternated lead changes through the eighth inning, when the game changed for the final time. The Blazers finally took the lead for good on an
Adam Kowalczyk single in the eighth, the final of 21 base hits for the home nine.
Individually,
Paul Pickerrell continued his recent hot streak with a game-high four RBI and five hits, while Kowalczyk and shortstop
Will Mullen added three hits of their own. Kowalczyk,
James Peterson and
Joey Harris each drove in a pair of runs, with the latter launching his third home run of the season.
The Generals proved to be no slouch offensively, scoring 11 runs on 13 base hits. Shortstop Matt Telesco highlighted the effort, contributing three hits and two RBI, each good enough for best on the team.
Belhaven used eight pitchers on Tuesday, with
Zach Osha (3-5) tossing the final 1.1 innings en route to his third victory of the year on the mound. Josie Chandler (0-1) was hit with his first loss of the year for the Generals, with the road team dropping the 14-11 on the season. With the win, the Green and Gold salvaged a split of the season series and improved to 20-11.
The Blazers return to action on Wednesday, when they host Tougaloo College at 4:00 from Smith-Wills Stadium. In three meetings so far this season, Belhaven has outscored the Bulldogs 40-6 and won all three contests.
