Softball splits SSAC doubleheader with Bethel

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team split its doubleheader on Monday with Bethel University, winning 6-1 in game one before falling 7-2 in the second game.

The Blazers jumped out to an early lead in game one, as Dani Craft came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Ashlee Hitt after reaching base with a one-out walk and reaching third on a passed ball followed by a wild pitch.

After the Lady Wildcats answered with a run in the second to tie things up at one, Hitt put a ball in play that went through the legs of the shortstop and allowed Josie Porter and Stacey Luciani to score.

Later in the inning, Dominique Corona picked up an RBI groundout as Mary Austin Barber scored after coming on to pinch run for Hitt.

In the fifth inning, Hitt put the Blazers up 5-1 with a solo homerun to straightaway center field.

The Blazers would go on to add one more insurance run in the sixth inning as Cary Yasses singled to shortstop and after a throwing error, Makenzie Hawkins came around to score.

Julienne Broussard picked up the win after scattering two hits and two walks over seven innings. Broussard had five strikeouts and the lone run allowed was unearned.

In game two, Belhaven fell behind after allowing a first inning run to the Lady Wildcats.

However, the Blazers would answer with a run in the second and then a run in the third inning to go up 2-1.

Victoria Sorrell hit a solo homerun to right field in the second inning to tie the game up at 1.

In the third inning, Emily Todd picked up an RBI single through the hole on the left side of the infield that scored Craft from second base.

The Blazers would hold the lead until the fifth inning when Bethel scored four runs in the inning on Jordan Herring, who was given the loss in the decision. Sarah Beth Harbour got the Blazers out of a bases loaded jam, but Bethel then added two more runs in the sixth inning to go up 7-2.

Belhaven will return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Martin Methodist starting at 3:30 p.m.
