JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven's baseball team extended their win streak to four on Tuesday evening, defeating Tougaloo College 16-2 at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers have scored 43 runs through their first four games, the most in more than a decade.
"We are pleased with our offense right now, but there is always room to improve," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "Our guys have reason to have confidence moving forward."
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the first inning after an RBI single by catcher Lige Mims, but the Blazers responded in the home half of the second. The Blazers posted five runs and never relinquished the lead, adding two runs in the third inning and nine in a lengthy fifth.
Joey Harris sparked the Belhaven lineup with five RBI and four base hits, including his first home run of the young season.
Hunter Sutton and
Kevin Lopez each contributed two hits, as ten Blazers combined for 15 hits in the rout.
The home team totaled eight pitchers, but it was Hendersonville, Tennessee junior
Tanner Moulder that emerged as the pitcher of record. The right hander picked up his first win of the year after a scoreless fourth inning in which he didn't deliver a pitch out of the strike zone and recorded two strikeouts.
2014 All Gulf Coast Athletic Conference pitcher Rodney McKay toed the rubber for the Bulldogs but lasted just four innings against the Belhaven offense. McKay surrendered ten runs on nine hits before Ronald Russell and Bennie Warner combined to finish the game.
Belhaven returns home on Thursday, when they will play their first game of the Belhaven Invitational at 4:00 pm from Smith-Wills Stadium. The tournament will see the Blazers take on Culver-Stockton College, the 9th-ranked Missouri Baptist Spartans, and defending National Champion Cumberland University.
"We have a few wins under our belt, but there are some excellent teams coming in this weekend," Denson said. "This week will really tell us what we can expect from our ballclub."
