NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Belhaven women's basketball team suffered their fourth loss in five games on Saturday, falling 81-70 at the hands of 8th-ranked Loyola University. The Blazers wrap up the regular season with a 15-14 record and now await the release of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament schedule.
Ariel Wilson, the conference's leading scorer, led Belhaven with 21 points Saturday, good enough for best on the team.
Candler Gregory and
Jacinda Smith followed with 16 and 11 respectively, while Wilson and
TaShayla Steede each collected four rebounds.
Loyola's Janeicia Neely led all scorers with 27 points despite shooting just 9-of-20 from the floor. The senior also had a third of the team's assists on the evening, while three other players finished in double figures.
The Lady Wolfpack doubled up the Blazers in the rebounding department, finishing with a 42-21 edge. The two teams were close in field goal percentage and identical in free throws, but the difference proved to be home team connecting on a dozen three-pointers.
The Blazers committed 21 turnovers and forced just 15 in the loss, and each team came away with nine steals. Loyola was able to finish off the season sweep of Belhaven, and the Lady Wolfpack finish the regular season with a 24-3 record.
Belhaven will now set its sights on the opening round of the SSAC Tournament on Wednesday. Belhaven will play William Carey in the opening round at 1:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to play No. 1 Bethel on Thursday.
