Belhaven falls in overtime in regular season finale

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Belhaven men's basketball team dropped their regular season finale on Saturday, falling 78-75 in overtime to the Loyola Wolfpack. The Blazers finish the season at 11-19 overall and now await the schedule for the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.

Datodrick Pinkston made the game-tying bucket with just eight seconds remaining in regulation, and after the Blazers forced a Nate Pierre turnover, the game was extended. Belhaven trailed by a point with five seconds left in the overtime period, but Tomeny McCall made two free throws to sink the Green and Gold.

Jordan Bedford highlighted the effort for Belhaven with 27 points, while De'la Mayers combined 12 points with 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Pinkston and Jerrial Dawson each added 12 points for the Blazers, as four players finished in double figures.

Belhaven outrebounded their hosts by a narrow 44-43 margin, but the Wolfpack shot a higher percentage from the floor. The Blazers made seven of their ten free throws, and Loyola countered with a 12-of-24 performance at the charity stripe.

Daniel Kuhl ended the evening as Loyola's leading scorer, connecting on nine of 13 from the floor to tally 24 points. Tomeny and Robert Lovaglio added 22 and 18 respectively, and Tomeny hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds, as well.

The Blazers will now set their sights on the opening round of the SSAC Tournament on Wednesday. Belhaven will play Auburn-Montgomery in the opening round at 11:45 a.m., with the winner advancing to play No. 2 Martin Methodist on Thursday.
