Box Score 3 FORT WORTH, Texas – The Belhaven Blazers softball team responded after a 1-2 opening day with a three-game sweep of day two's opponents in the Cowtown Classic on Saturday.
After seven runs total in day one, the Belhaven bats came alive as the Blazers defeated Tabor College 8-1, University of Saint Mary 7-3, and McPherson College 12-0.
Belhaven jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Tabor College and that was all that
Jordan Herring would need on the day. Herring allowed just the one run while scattering seven hits and recording nine strikeouts.
Belhaven went on to add a few runs in the middle innings with RBIs from
Danielle Bacon and
Dominique Corona. In the sixth inning,
Toni Wilson capped off the game with a triple to help fuel a three-run inning as Belhaven went up 8-1.
Game two against Saint Mary played out differently for the Blazers as neither team scored until the Blazers plated runs in the fifth inning.
Makenzie Hawkins,
Victoria Sorrell and
Carly Yasses added RBI's in the fifth and sixth inning to put Belhaven up 3-0. However, that lead was reduced to none by Saint Mary, as they tied the game up at 3 in the seventh inning.
Belhaven responded though by loading the bases and
Ashlee Hitt gave the Blazers the win with a walk-off grand slam to give Belhaven a 7-3 victory.
Julienne Broussard picked up eight strikeouts in the game. Broussard allowed all three runs on seven hits.
In the final game of the day, Belhaven's bats carried over the momentum from the middle game with an offensive surge through the first three innings to generate 12 runs.
The Blazers went on to pitch the shutout after keeping McPherson scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Sarah Beth Harbour pitched four scoreless innings, allowing five hits, with one strikeout in four innings of work.
Lauren Feagin closed out the fifth in the game.
Belhaven is now set to play its first home games of the 2015 season against Centenary College on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McLeod Field.
