Wilson reaches 1000 in Blazers 55-53 win over AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala.Ariel Wilson reached the 1000-point mark Thursday night as the Belhaven Women's Basketball team picked up a 55-53 victory over Auburn-Montgomery in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

Willson reached the mark, becoming the 11th player in school history to do so, with five points in the first half of the game.

The sophomore added nine points in the second half to finish with 14 total points to lead the Blazers (14-10, 7-6 SSAC). Wilson's 14-point night brings her career total to 1,010, one behind Sarah Carr for 10th on the all time list.

After a low-scoring first 20 minutes, Belhaven took a 20-17 lead into the break. The game opened up a little more in the second half, nearly doubling the points of the first half.

Belhaven fell behind by five points early in the second half as the Warhawks (17-9, 8-6 SSAC) went on an early run. However, the Blazers were able to answer back with a 20-7 run over the next 8:40 to go up by as much as eight points.

Wilson, TaShayla Steede and Candler Gregory led the run with seven, six, and four points, respectively.

Steede finished with 13 total points in the game and led the Blazers with six rebounds and two assists.

Sierra Pittman was also in double figures for the Blazers in the game, scoring 11 points.

The Blazers led the way with 46 percent shooting after a 20-for-44 night from the field.

Despite being outrebounded 39-30 and giving up 16 more attempts from the field, Belhaven held AUM to just 33 percent shooting after the Warhawks shot just 20-for-60 from the field.

The Blazers will now return home for an SSAC test against No. 5 Bethel University on Saturday. Tip is set for 2 p.m. in Rugg Arena.
