Bedford's buzzer beater lifts Belhaven to 77-76 win over AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala.Jordan Bedford hit a buzzer beater Thursday night to propel the Blazers to a 77-76 victory over Auburn-Montgomery in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
 
With 2.7 seconds left, the ball was inbounded by the Blazers (9-16, 5-8 SSAC) after a made free throw by the Warhawks (11-13, 5-9 SSAC) put Auburn-Montgomery up 76-74. De'la Mayers quickly fed Bedford with the ball, who hit a three-pointer as time expired give the Blazers the victory.
 
After exchanging the lead back-and-forth for much of the second half, the Warhawks took the lead with 6:39 remaining. The Blazers fell behind by as much as five in the final minutes.
 
With 10 seconds remaining, coming out of a timeout, Mayers made a layup to cut the deficit to 74-72. After the Warhawks made just one of two free throws, Mayers cut the deficit to one with a dunk at 2.7 seconds remaining.
 
After a foul against the Blazers on the inbound attempt, the Warhawks again made just one of two free throws to go up 76-74, and give the Blazers a chance for the tie or win.
 
Mayers led the Blazers on the night with 22 points. He also finished in a tie for the team high in rebounds with six.
 
Bedford also finished with six rebounds and 20 points in the game.
 
Jerrial Dawson and Datodrick Pinkston also finished in double digits with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Pinkston and Josh Gaskin each had five rebounds in the game.
 
Josh Carpenter led the Blazers with five assists in the game.
 
Belhaven finished the night shooting 46 percent (26-of-56), just slightly better than the Warhawks, who finished with 44 percent shooting (29-of-65).
 
The Blazers were outrebounded 38-33 on the night. Auburn-Montgomery turned 16 offensive boards into 19 second chance points in the game, while Belhaven had just eight second chance points in the game.
 
Belhaven did score 13 points of turnovers to just seven for the Warhawks.
 
The Blazers will now return home for an SSAC test against Bethel University on Saturday. Tip is set for 4 p.m. in Rugg Arena.
