Blazers comeback bid falls short in 2OT to Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Belhaven Blazers comeback bid fell short Saturday night as they fell to Huntingdon College 84-80 in double overtime.

Belhaven trailed by as much as 19 in the second half, but a 28-10 run over the middle of the second half allowed the Blazers to climb back into the game against the hosts.

Josh Carpenter sealed extra basketball by sinking a layup with 2.5 seconds left.

Each team had a chance to win in the first overtime, but missed three pointers late sent the game to a second extra time session.

However, two turnovers in the second overtime proved costly as Huntingdon turned them into three points that proved to be the majority of the difference in the contest.

Josh Gaskin led all Blazers with 26 points and 12 rebounds in the contest. Gaskin also recorded three assists, three blocks, and two steals in 45 minutes of action.

De'la Mayers also finished in double figures, missing a double-double in the second half by one rebound. Mayers had no rebounds after 20 minutes but finished with 18 points and nine boards.

Carpenter finished with 15 points in the game and added three steals and two assists, while Dyron Anderson rounded out the Blazers in double digits with 10 points. Anderson also had five steals to lead all Blazers.

After shooting 36 percent in the first half, Belhaven came out in the second half and shot 62 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from behind the arc.

The Blazers had 15 steals in the contest, forcing 22 total turnovers by the Hawks. Belhaven had just 18 turnovers in 50 minutes of action.

The Blazers return to action on Thursday when they open up the Black Tie Invitational against host Birmingham-Southern College.
