Belhaven Draws Opening Match at NCCAA Nationals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Belhaven Blazers opened up the 2015 NCCAA Men's Soccer National Championships on Monday with a 0-0 draw against Chowan University.

The Blazers' (13-3-2) scoreless result against the Hawks (11-7-4) was one of two draws on the opening day of the tournament and snapped an 8-game win streak for Belhaven.

"We had a solid team performance tonight," said head coach Carl Griffiths. "It was a competitive match, and the result was fair in the end. I was pleased with the discipline and resilience we showed throughout the 110 minutes."

Belhaven was held to just two shots in the 90 minutes of regulation, but the Blazers came on strong in the two overtime periods, firing five shots toward the Chowan goal.

Cillian Thompson had the closest chance for the Blazers in the game, missing a winner by inches. The senior struck the post in the 97th minute.

Thompson would also take both shots for the Green and Gold in the second overtime, but failed to find the net.

"I do believe we had the better chances during the overtime periods," said Griffiths. "Our desire and push to win the match was clearly evident."

Ben Schaefer stopped all three Chowan shots that were on target in the game. Chowan had six total shots in the match, all coming in the first 75 minutes.

The Belhaven defense held the Hawks without a shot over the final 35 minutes.

The last time the Blazers played to a scoreless draw was against William Carey on October 22, 2002.

With Monday's draw, Belhaven and Chowan both earn a point in pool play. Chowan plays Grace College on Tuesday.

The winner of the pool between Belhaven, Chowan and Grace advances to the semifinals. The top second-place team from all three pools will also advance to the knockout stages.

The Blazers will play Grace in the final game of the opening round on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. at Austin-Tindall Regional Park.
