JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Men's Basketball team fell to rival Millsaps 64-72 Tuesday night in the first meeting between the two schools since 2009.
The Blazers (0-2) stayed close with the Majors (1-4) throughout the game, but were only able to hold the lead for a short time early in the first half.
Dyron Anderson led the way for the Blazers, finishing with 14 points. The sophomore came off the bench for Belhaven, going 5-of-8 from the floor, including two from behind the arc and two free throws. Anderson also had two rebounds and an assist in 14 minutes of action.
Josh Carpenter had 13 points, the only other Blazer in double digits. The senior also grabbed two rebounds and a steal to go along with two assists. Carpenter was 5-of-9 from the free-throw line, the only Blazer above .500 from the line in the game.
Belhaven was just 8-of-24 (.333) from the free-throw line, the big difference in the contest. Millsaps was 22-of-32 from the free-throw line.
LaDarrius Drain led the Blazers with seven rebounds in the game. However, Belhaven was outrebounded 53-30 overall in the contest.
Defensively, Belhaven had 12 steals and five blocks, including three from
Josh Gaskin. The Blazers also had 14 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest.
The Blazers shot 44 percent (12-27) in the first half, but were just 35 percent (12-34) in the second half.
Belhaven did have 26 points in the paint, while also recording 15 points off of turnovers. The Blazers' bench accounted for 38 points in the contest.
Belhaven will return to action against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on December 3 in the team's home opener.
