Belhaven comeback falls short, Blazers fall 14-10 to McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – The Belhaven Blazers fell to McMurry University 14-10 Saturday afternoon to wrap the away schedule for the Blazers in 2015.

Clayton Webb's desperation-hail mary pass was picked off at the goal line as time expired to seal the defeat to the Warhawks.

Alonso Acosta put the Blazers on the scoreboard on the opening drive of the game, kicking a 27-yard field goal. With the kick, Acosta moved into a tie for 2nd on Belhaven's all-time list for career field goals with 18, joining Matt Wilson (2002-05).

Later in the game, Acosta would also kick a 73-yard punt, a career long and the second longest for Belhaven all time, six yards off the record.

McMurry would take the lead late in the first quarter, as Dontrell Dock scored on an 8-yard run with 37 seconds left.  Steven Joiner would jump up to block the extra point, giving McMurry a 6-3 advantage.

A few drives later, Webb capped off a 10-play, 72-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run that helped give Belhaven a 10-6 lead.

However, McMurry would answer back just before halftime with a 15-yard pass from Matthew McHugh to David McHugh, followed by a successful 2-point conversion attempt to go up 14-10.

Belhaven's offense accumulated 393 yards of offense, including 263 yards through the air.

Webb finished 22-for-42 with 260 yards and two interceptions. He also had 13 carries for 33 yards and the lone Blazers touchdown.

Nate Williams set career highs for reception and yards with 10 catches for 102 yards. Kevin Shief also had career high numbers with eight receptions for 83 yards.

Tristan Hibbeler saw limited action but picked up 3-yards passing in the game and is at exactly 1000 yards on the season.

Octavious Arrington had the big day on the ground for Belhaven, rushing for 100 yards on 26 carries, both career highs.

Saturday's game was the first time Belhaven was held without a passing touchdown since September 14, 2013 against the University of the Cumberlands.

Ryan Beatty had a big day for the Blazers defensively. Beatty had two of Belhaven's three interceptions in the game. It is the fourth time this season that Belhaven has had a single player with two interceptions in a game. It had only happened six times in Belhaven's first 17 seasons.

Isaac Nelson also had an interception on Saturday, his fourth of the season.  Nelson also finished with six tackles in the game.

Joining him with six tackles was Joiner, who led the Blazers with three tackles for a loss and also had a sack. Joiner also forced a fumble to go along with his blocked PAT in the first quarter.

David Hudson led the Blazers with eight tackles in the game and also had two tackles for a loss and one of three Blazers sacks.

The Blazers will return home to H.T. Newell Field to wrap up the season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Sul Ross State University.
