Blazers Defeat Patriots on Senior Night

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer Team defeated the Texas at Tyler Patriots 3-1 on Senior Night at the Belhaven Bowl on Saturday.

"The seniors were ecstatic about finishing their time at the Bowl. They have special memories here, and the energy from them and the entire team in general made tonight's match special," said head coach Carl Griffiths.

Belhaven (10-3-1) secured its 10th consecutive 10-win season in program history with Saturday's win over the Patriots (6-3-2).

The Blazers started the scoring early in the ninth minute with Lucas Talaveira-Befi notching his 11th goal of the season off the past by John Ledbetter.

The Blazers added two goals by Cillian Thompson in the second half. After a red card was issued to the UT-Tyler goalie in the 69th minute, Thompson stepped in to score the penalty kick for his eighth goal of the season and the 15th of his career. He becomes the 20th Blazer to accomplish 15 goals in a career. His second goal of the night came 8:10 later deep in the box to put it through the keeper's hands into the net.

The Patriots would break the shutout with a goal in the 79th minute.

"We need to be consistent; we were able to finish goals tonight," Griffiths added. "We finished chances that we had, which was something that we have had issues with this season. We have let matches drag out because of this, and if we are able to finish like we have tonight, we will have opportunities to score goals over the final three matches of the regular season."

The Blazers will have less than a week to prepare for their next match, as they will travel to Pineville, Louisiana for to face against the Wildcats of Louisiana College on Saturday, October 24. Kickoff for the match will be at 6 p.m.
