Blazers fall short after four late lead changes

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's basketball team fell 56-53 to Dilliard in a back-and-forth second half Thursday night at Rugg Arena.

After going into the half with a 29-21 lead, Dillard inched closer with each minute in the second half. With a score of 43-42, Dillard took its first lead since the early minutes of the game.

From that point, there were four additional lead changes. A Shantrell Lumar steal and two clutch free throws with 6.3 seconds remaining in the game gave the Bleu Devils a three-point edge, and ultimately the win.

"We did not do a good job of putting them away in this game," said head coach Steve Calder. "We need to do better at closing out games that we control going forward."

The Blazers were led by Ariel Wilson's 15 points and 10 rebounds in the game, as Wilson collected her fourth double-double on season.

TaShayla Steede added nine points and eight rebounds in the contest.

Dillard's Alena Evans spearheaded the Bleu Devils' attack with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the game. Lumar finished with seven points and four rebounds.

Belhaven scored 28 points in the paint, and won the rebounding battle with a +6 margin.

However, the Bleu Devils won the turnover battle by only giving up 14 turnovers, while forcing the Blazers to turn iit over 22 times. Dillard capitalized from the Blazers' mistakes, scoring 18 points off Belhaven's turnovers.

The Blazers will host Coastal Georgia at Rugg Arena on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
