JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team defeated the University of Mobile 69-64 at home inside Rugg Arena to improve its win streak to four games.
Sierra Pittman and
Kenya Wright had big days for the Blazers (13-7, 6-3 SSAC), joining
Ariel Wilson as the trio combined for 56 points against a very tough Mobile (10-8, 5-4 SSAC) defense Saturday afternoon.
Wright led all scorers in the game, scoring 21 points. Wright also led the team with six assists and tied for a team high eight rebounds with
TaShayla Steede.
Pittman finished with 17 points in the game and collected five rebounds to go along with a tie for the team high in steals with four.
Wilson also finished with four steals in the game and collected four boards and four assists to go along with 18 points.
Neither team had a particularly great night shooting, but the Blazers did edge the Rams with 37 percent shooting to Mobile's 35 percent in the game. Belhaven was also 27 percent from three-point range while Mobile was just 14 percent.
Belhaven made a big difference in the game in the turnover department. The Blazers helped force 13 turnovers by the Rams, including 10 steals and the Green and Gold turned it into 15 points. Mobile had just four points off of 10 Belhaven turnovers.
The Blazers trailed by as much as five points in the game, early in the second half, but were able to put a rally together to go ahead by as much as nine with 12:53 remaining. The teams tied each other eight times throughout the game and also exchanged the lead seven other times.
Belhaven will now set its sights on the road as the Blazers begin a two-game stretch away from home. The Blazers will play Bethel on Thursday night in McKenzie, Tenn. before traveling to Blue Mountain on Saturday.
