Strong second half propels Blazers to 59-49 win over Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Women's Basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat William Carey 59-49 Thursday night.

An all around shooting performance led Belhaven (10-7, 4-3 SSAC) on the night as four Blazers finished with double figures in scoring.

Ariel Wilson led the way for the Blazers, finishing with 18 points after connecting on five shots from the field. She was also 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Wilson also dished out three assists

Candler Gregory, TaShayla Steede, and Sierra Pittman also finished in double figures. Gregory finished with 11 points and Pittman added 12 points for the Blazers.

Steede finished with 12 points on the night and also led the Blazers on the boards, grabbing six rebounds.

Gregory and Wilson also added four rebounds apiece.

A solid second half performance helped the Blazers pull away from a very tight game after the first 20 minutes. Belhaven led William Carey by double figures for a large part of the second half.

After an early run by William Carey put the Blazers behind by 6, Belhaven responded and took the lead at 9-8 midway through the first half on a shot by Gregory.

Not much separated the two teams for the remainder of the first half as three points was the biggest lead that either team worked over the remainder of the first half.

Belhaven went into the half with a slim 25-23 lead after Gregory made a pair of free throw shots and a jumper in the paint on the Green and Gold's final two trips down the court.

The Blazers finished the night shooting 20-of-43 from the field, but were 0-7 from beyond the arc. However, Belhaven made up for it at the line by connecting on 19-of-22 free throw attempts.

Belhaven performed well defensively, holding William Carey to 22-for-53 shooting from the field and only sent Carey to the line for nine total free throw attempts.

The Blazers will return to action on Saturday as Belhaven returns home to Rugg Arena for a 2 p.m. contest against Auburn University-Montgomery.
