MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up their sixth consecutive victory on Saturday with a 3-1 defeat of Rhodes College. The Blazers allowed just their second goal during the win streak and now have outscored opponents 13-2 in those six contests.
"It was a very hot day at a difficult place to play, so this was a tough win," Head Coach
Carl Griffiths said. "We made some adjustments after going down 1-0 at halftime and picked up the tempo offensively. We were able to create many more good scoring chances, which led to our three goals."
Alec Rhodes found Mark Robinson in the 39th minute to give the Lynx (2-4-1) a 1-0 lead, but Belhaven (6-1-0) goalkeeper
Daniel Prado made sure nothing else found the back of the net. Prado started in goal for just the second time in his career but was able to save four shots and pick up his second victory of the year.
Less than five minutes into the second half,
Joao Belmonte launched a shot past Rhodes goalie Riley Sheen, giving Belmonte his third goal in his last four games. Sheen finished his afternoon with seven saves but was unable to prevent the Blazers from sneaking two more passed him.
The match was tied for more than a half hour after Belmonte's equalizer, but
Pedro DeSouza would put Belhaven on top after dribbling down the right side. The 2-1 score lasted for just three minutes before Samuel Rosselli connected off a corner toss to give Belhaven an insurance goal.
The Blazers outshot the Lynx 19-10, including a 10-5 mark on frame. Belhaven also took the edge in corner kicks by a tally of 7-5 en route to their sixth victory of 2014.
Belhaven has just one contest remaining before entering the conference portion of their schedule, a Saturday afternoon matchup with Talladega College. The two teams are set to begin at 1:00 pm from Alabama.
