The home team struck for a pair of runs in the first inning before Belhaven responded with a three-run top of the second. Martin Methodist plated two more in their half, but managed just one run after that point. The Blazers, meanwhile, scratched across two in the third before adding one in the fourth and an insurance run in the seventh. 2013 NAIA All-American
Denee' Crawford highlighted the Blazer offense with two home runs and three RBI, while
Ashlee Hitt was the only other Belhaven hitter with a multi-hit afternoon.
"Denee' got back to her old self and swung the bat really well," Head Coach
Kevin Griffin said. "Her home runs really sparked our offense tonight."
Josie Porter,
Jessica Paris, and
Shelby Watson each contributed a hit to the effort, as Belhaven tagged starting pitcher Emily Robb for seven runs. Robb allowed two walks, a strikeout, and eight hits into the seventh before Ana Davila recorded the final three outs of the opening game.
Martin Methodist's lineup outhit Belhaven's, as four Redhawks contributed a multi-hit ballgame. The bulk of the damage was done by Courtney Grooms and Hannah Reeder, who combined for six hits, three RBI, and three runs scored.
Belhaven gave the ball to Ginger Longergan, who lasted just two innings after allowing four runs on six hits and striking out two.
Katy Adair came in to provide relief, giving up just one run in five innings of work while fanning two Lady Redhawk hitters en route to her eighth victory of the year.
"Ginger pitched well, but their hitters saw the ball well," Griffin said. "Katy did a great job of slowing down their offense, and she was big for us."
The nightcap saw right hander
Jessica Paris in the circle, and the Blazer senior didn't disappoint, hurling the entire game and picking up her seventh win. Paris allowed just two earned runs on five hits while issuing one walk and striking out six.
Martin Methodist starter Caroline Ezell went the distance, as well, but her eight strikeouts were undone by Belhaven's nine hits. Crawford, Hitt, and
Katy Adair each struck for two base hits, while three teammates joined the hit column, as well.
Shelby Watson laced a triple for the only Blazer extra-base hit, while Crawford, Hitt, Adair, and Dominque Corona were credited with driving in a run. The Redhawks' Dharianna Familia recorded two hits and scored a pair, and Courtney Grooms drove in the squad's final run of the evening.
Belhaven will return to action on Wednesday, when they will host 6th ranked Spring Hill College in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm from McLeod Field.
