"We haven't played in a week, so I was concerned about whether or not we would hit the ball today," Head Coach
Kevin Griffin said. "We saw the ball well all day, and eventually our hits started coming."
Senior
Jessica Paris received the start in the circle for the Blazers, pitching the entire game and allowing just two hits. The right hander issued two walks and struck out five Topper batters en route to her fifth victory.
Josie Porter sparked the offense with a 2-3 effort, two runs scored, and two RBI, while
Denee' Crawford drove in three runs of her own.
Carly Yasses was the only other Blazer to record a hit in the opener, though Paris and
Emily Todd each drew a pair of walks.
Brooke Denton and Heather Noe combined for all of the Blue Mountain offense, while Denton lasted just one inning on the mound. Denton permitted six Belhaven runs on just one hit and four walks before Jessalyn Brown hurled the final three frames. Brown gave up two runs on three hits, and the Blazers cruised to their third straight conference win.
Katy Adair improved to 6-2 in the circle after throwing all seven innings of Game Two. The senior allowed two runs on four hits while walking three and fanning six.
Adair helped her own cause with an RBI-double at the plate, one of six Blazers that drove in a run in the victory.
Shelby Watson laced a home run over the left field wall for her second long ball of the year, while Todd,
Dominique Corona,
Haley Yasses, and
Victoria Sorrell drove in a run each.
"Shelby helps set the tone for our lineup, and when she is hitting well, our lineup gets tougher," Griffin said. "She really got us going today."
The Topper offense saw Haley Knepp, Whitney Hardwick, Noe, and Sam Sagely each contribute a base hit, while Meggin Nelson was credited with the team's lone RBI. Rebecca Sloan was hit with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits through 4.2 innings.
Jessalyn Brown and Brooke Denton combined for the final four outs, issuing just one hit and holding the Belhaven offense in check for the duration of the afternoon.
The Blazers returns to action on Friday, when they play host to SSAC nemesis Faulkner University. First pitch against the Eagles is slated for 2:00 PM from McLeod Field.
"Faulkner is a very good team that is playing well right now, so we cannot take them lightly," Griffin said. "We have to stay focused this weekend."
