JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven men's tennis team took on NCAA Division I cross-town foe, Jackson State Tuesday afternoon. The No. 9 Blazers knocked off the Tigers 6-1 to improve to 7-1 overall and in the process extended their winning streak to five games.
"The guys played really good tennis overall," Belhaven Head Coach
Levi Patton said. "Jackson State is a very strong team and they are at the top of the SWAC Conference every year. I am very happy with the way the guys are performing through the first eight matches this season."
In men's doubles, Andre Borghi and
Enrico Patriarca notched the first Blazer victory defeating Herman Geria and Carlos Martinez 8-3. This was followed by
Daniel Prado and
David Mejia's 8-4 win over the Tiger's Camilo Patino and Ryan Swanier.
In men's singles, Andre Borghi upended Kashyap Ashok 7-5, 6-2;
Nikita Lisov defeated Herman Geria 6-2, 6-4;
Jefferson Nino topped Carlos Martinez 6-4, 6-4;
David Mejia got past Ryan Swanier 6-1, 6-2, and
Enrico Patriarca bested Camilo Patino 4-6, 6-3, (10-5). The only Tiger victory came in Jose Luque's 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Belhaven's
Daniel Prado.
The Blazers will travel to Montgomery, Alabama for the Auburn-Montgomery tournament on Friday March 7th and Saturday March 8th.
